Officers and Executives Files 1923-1963.

This series contains mission files gathered during the terms of four mission executives of the Boards of China/Foreign/World Missions of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church: The Rev. Dr. O.J. Johnson, President of the China Mission Board and the Board of Foreign Missions, 1914-1941; The Rev. Dr. S. Hjalmar Swanson, executive director of the Board of Foreign Missions, 1939-1955 ; The Rev. Melvin A. Hammarberg, executive director of the Board of Foreign/World Missions, 1955-1961; The Rev. Dr. Rudolph Burke, executive director of the Board of World Missions, 1961- 1962. Included in these files are the records of two Board treasurers: Dr. N.P Benson, 1922-1954; and Mr. A.B. Strom, 1954-1962. The Johnson files are arranged alphabetically by mission field and then chronologically for each field. Included are minutes of various mission boards and committees in the United States and overseas. There is also correspondence and reports from field secretaries Fred W. Wyman and Anton Lundeen. The Swanson files contain pictures and short biographies of missionaries, his personal and professional papers, and correspondence with numerous ecumenical agencies. The subject files are arranged chronologically and conclude with N.B. Benson's treasure's reports. Hammarberg's files are largely correspondence, study reports, and A.B. Strom's treasurer's reports. The Burke files include real estate descriptions of board-owned houses in Minnesota and correspondence related to the merger with the Mission Board of the United Lutheran Church in America as the Lutheran Church in America was formed in 1962.
